10 Interesting or Weird Jobs

There are a lot of jobs in the world. Things that may be normal for one culture while completely foreign to another, things that are so niche only a handful of people do them, or even jobs that just seem…useless. We wanted to waste your time by introducing you to some of the most unique and wacky jobs that actually exist!

Milking snakes isn’t exactly what the name sounds like, though it’s quite comedic to think of what a snake milker can be. They actually play a really important part in producing & researching anti-venom for snake bites! There are many people who still die to snake bites, so this profession is made to acquire snake’s venom and bring it to the researchers!

Although they do hire dogs to taste the food as well (who would’ve guessed that the main user of the product should enjoy it), there are also people who taste dog food. In fairness, as much as dogs are used, they can’t really communicate what it tastes like, or what it needs. Although they have a human palate, these people talk about the flavor and what they think should be changed.

When someone important dies, but they have little or limited friends and family, sometimes professional mourners are hired to be present to uphold the person’s reputation. This is more prominent in some cultures more than others, but overall is just a facade to maintain someone’s image post-mortem.

Professional bridesmaids do exactly what bridesmaids do, fulfilling roles of shopping, arranging the bachelorette party, dress shopping — the list goes on. You have to know your weddings inside and out, but otherwise it’s a relatively easy thing to get into, but I’d imagine it could be hard to explain to your parents who this stranger they’ve never seen before is and why they’re helping with the intimate parts of the bride’s to-dos.

You may have actually heard of this, especially if you’ve gone to busy theme parks like Disney or are especially adamant about getting early in line for Black Friday deals. They do exactly what they sound like, and stand in line in place for you, and will trade their spot. That way you can go about your life or do other things and not have to wait an extra amount of time to get the benefit of whatever you were going to stand in line for!

When you think about it, this job makes sense that it exists. It’s just an odd one, and probably is generally given to maintenance. But in some bigger clubs, its entirely possible that this is just their singular job. Every day, dozens if not hundreds of golf balls find their way to be lost in the ponds about the greens, and its someone’s job to get them out!

Some people are just bad at communicating or don’t have any charisma online. Usually, people will enlist the help of their friends to help craft the ‘perfect response’ or something like that, but there are other people who struggle so much that they pay someone to help them! Some people do this as a side-gig and help people find their love. Though, I wonder if the person receiving the messages will be wise when it comes time for the writer’s service will no longer be required…

An odd duty, you might think, and you’d be right. It’s weird. BUT in fairness, when you’re using a paper towel, napkin, or even toilet paper, you don’t want it to smell bad. Enter the paper towel sniffer, who’s job is exactly what it sounds like: weed out the bad smelling paper towels. And it pays more than you think, too: $52,000 a year. That’s $1,000 a week just because you smell paper.

Another wedding job, and another guest job: apparently people want people around. This is just another facade that makes the wedding seem more populated to make it seem like you’re more popular or raise the couple’s reputation. They don’t even do anything else, just…appear.

Watching paint dry is an idiom for something that’s really boring. Generally, you don’t ever want to experience a feeling that feels like watching paint dry. However, it can literally be your job to watch paint dry. The duty is just to paint with new paint, and see how long it dries — how it mixes, coagulates, and the time for each stage.
