I’ll preface this by saying I have never watched sumo and a staggering amount of the memes were specific to athletes and they wouldn’t translate well to people who don’t know the sport! So this is my attempt to make an approachable meme list that sumo enjoyers and sumo virgins can both enjoy! Sumo wrestling is a form of wrestling where the wrestler (rikishi) tries to get their opponent out of a ring or to touch the ground with any body part that isn’t their foot. The sport originated in Japan, and is best known in Japan, and holds many of the traditions and rituals passed down over the generations. Some people may not take the sport seriously because it “looks like fat guys pushing each other” but it’s honestly a lot more than that, even for the athletes! To thank them for all their hard work and training, why not waste some time with these funny sumo wrestling memes?
